Renaissance Studies special issue published with introduction and article by Eli Cumings

A special issue exploring the relationship between religion and race-making in early modernity will shortly be published by Renaissance Studies. Edited and introduced by Eli Cumings, this issue arises from a series of MMoR-sponsored events—namely the 2023 conference Christianity and Racemaking in the Early Modern Atlantic World and two linked panels on race and religion at RSA 2024, co-sponsored by the Society for Renaissance Studies. In a compact series of articles, contributors Caitlin Irene DiMartino, Elizabeth Liliann Blakemore, Ashleigh Elser, and Eli herself develop lines of thinking explored at these events. Together, they propose new sources and archives for investigating premodern race-making, reassert the centrality of religious thought and practice to these processes, and advocate for further research at these intersections.
